Role & Responsibilities
- Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain, optimize, and scale a high-availability AWS-hosted API.
- Configure, tune, and troubleshoot Elasticsearch clusters.
- Automate infrastructure management using tools like Terraform or Ansible.
- Design and enhance real-time monitoring, logging, and alerting.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and ensure system stability.
- Collaborate with technical and business teams.
- Must-Have Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in CS, Engineering, or related field.
- 6+ years experience in software engineering or DevOps.
- Strong AWS knowledge and experience.
- Deep expertise with Elasticsearch.
- Experience managing production APIs in the cloud.
- Hands-on infrastructure automation skills.
- Ability to implement and manage monitoring systems.
- Strong communication and collaborative problem-solving skills.
- Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

You’ll work on a highly visible, cloud-native API that powers data discovery and access for users ranging from scientists to students—helping transform and improve data quality across diverse environmental and socio-economic domains. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in high-traffic, performance-critical environments and is passionate about infrastructure-as-code, automation, and continuous improvement. The Senior Software Engineer (DevOps) at STS will: Maintain, optimize, and scale a high-availability, AWS-hosted API system Configure, tune, and troubleshoot Elasticsearch clusters for performance and resiliency Automate infrastructure management using Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation Design and enhance real-time monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions using CloudWatch, Prometheus, or similar tools Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across services, with a focus on stability and uptime Collaborate across technical and business teams to ensure the API meets evolving mission and user needs Education and Experience: Required Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field 6+ years of experience in software engineering or DevOps roles Strong AWS knowledge: EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, RDS, Elasticsearch Deep expertise with Elasticsearch: index management, query tuning, cluster scaling Experience managing production-grade APIs in a cloud environment Hands-on infrastructure automation skills (Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation) Demonstrated ability to implement and manage monitoring systems and alerting workflows Strong communication skills and ability to solve problems collaboratively Must be able to work the hours of 8am-5pm Eastern Time regardless of your home location Desired Skills/Experience Experience with AWS monitoring tools like X-Ray and CloudTrail Familiarity with CI/CD and automated deployment/testing pipelines Experience in high-traffic API performance tuning and security hardening Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders STS is committed to equal employment opportunity.
